I don’t know if I have mentioned it before, but I am one of the lucky few who actively enjoy their job. It has just the right balance of pressure (I work best under a deadline) and down time, and while I am doing essentially the same thing day in and day out the specifics vary enough to keep me interested. The money is not super-fantastic, but it isn’t bad. All in all, a pretty great deal.
That being said, there are a few very minor things that irritate me on an almost constant basis. They are totally unimportant, and they do not at all impact my ability to perform my job. Also, I am quite sure that these are things that happen pretty much everywhere but I am feeling gripey today [my husband: HOW RARE] so here they are:
Thing #1: People who attempt to have private conversations in common areas. My company used to be in a building where most of us had our own offices. Within the last year we moved into a cube farm so yes, it has been an adjustment. HOWEVER. Do not look at me like I’m crashing your party when I am just trying to get a cup of coffee. Go talk about your deep dark family secrets outside or something.
Thing #2: People who do not respond to a simple “hello”. Am I expecting too much here? It’s 8:15ish, I’m in the breakroom getting my coffee, you walk in. I say hello. You say…nothing. THEN, someone else walks in and you say hello to her. What is this? Am I not worthy of your hello? There’s no way you could have thought I said it to someone else since we were the only two people in the breakroom at the time.
Thing #3: OMFG THE DRESS CODE. Honestly, people, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE. We have a policy! In writing even! It is posted on the break room wall!! Why? WHYYYYY do some people insist on wearing things that no one should ever wear to an office, or to any other place for that matter? Athletic-style sport sandals? NOT OKAY. Stretchy cotton pants that look like they should be worn to clean one’s house? NOT OKAY. T-shirts with logos? Only allowed on Football Fridays, and then the logo should be that of the university we work for NOT THE LOGO OF A LOCAL RADIO STATION. Business casual, people. Not “I just rolled out of bed casual”. And on Monday – Thursday, not “Friday casual” either. I realize that I dress a little more formally than is dictated by the dress code policy. That is my personal choice, and I do not expect the same from you. But I do expect that you wear different attire than you would to run errands on a Saturday morning!! Do you realize you look like an utter slob? What would make you think that is acceptable in an office building? It’s not like we’re doing manual labor around here. We all work in front of computers all day. GAAAAH.
